The Spirit of the Southwest

A multimedia art exhibit and installation by Meika A. Alberici

The Spirit of the Southwest"This exhibition reflects a culmination of influences over the last 25 years. Those influences have come in a variety of forms from the work of contemporary Sculptors Deborah Butterfield, and Alice Aycock; the work of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Art Deco Movement -- to a ten year stint in New York City. However, one of the most important and decisive influences on my work, as reflected in the title of the exhibition, was an earlier, unexpected move to the high desert of Santa Fe, New Mexico. There, I found that the light and brilliant colors of both earth and sky combined with 12th Century ancient ruins and the geometric shapes and symbols of Native American art, moved my work in a direction that continues to inform my art today -- where in Gainesville I again benefit from the colors, contexts, and textures of nature."

Meika's art was on display in the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research, 3324 Turlington Hall, from September 12 to November 27th, 2002.
