Giving Wildlife a Voice

An art exhibit by Barbara Matusik

Elephant ArtFor people of the 21st century human understanding of the spirit and nature of the "wild" has become remote in our everyday lives. However, for the first peoples of the world that knowledge of environment and animal behavior was the way for humanity to exist. Being one with nature was the only way of life. Although animals are the focus of my artwork I want the viewer to come away with a feeling that human intervention with the environment of these animals plays an important part in the survival of that animal and its environment. Now more that ever it has become increasingly important to listen to the spirit voices of the wild and to understand the importance of these things in our future. Most of the inspiration for my artwork comes from nature and the environment. The study of animals and their habitat has evolved from my early interest in domestic animals and pets to wild life and their habitat, which has been the focal point that has consumed my research over the years. Environmental issues and wildlife projects have been an interest since high school.

Barbara's artwork was on display in the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research, 3324 Turlington Hall, from May 12th to August 9, 2004.
