The Alice Charlotte Hogsett Award for Women and Girls

About Judith Brown (1941-1991)

The Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research at the University of Florida announces the Alice Charlotte Hogsett Award for Education for Women and Girls for 2000. The purpose of the award is to recognize the best paper, project or proposal focused on the education of women and girls.

About Alice Charlotte Hogsett

Alice Charlotte Hogsett was born on June1, 1938 in Jackson, Tennessee. She received her undergraduate degree from Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis), her master's degree from the University of Toronoto, and her Ph.D. in French Literature from Harvard University. Author of more than a dozen journal articles, Hogsett also wrote a book on 18th Century author Germaine de Stael. During her teaching career she taught at Duke University, Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, Richland Northeast High School in Columbia, South Carolina, and Lincoln Middle School in Gainesville. She died on March 10, 1996 of abdominal cancer.

Field and Purpose

The Alice Charlotte Hogsett Award of $300 will be given for the best paper, project, or thesis/dissertation proposal focusing on the education of women and girls completed at the University of Florida during 1999 or Spring 2000. The work may have been undertaken in any class or in pursuit of any degree in any college at UF.

Eligibility and Nomination

Both undergraduate students are eligible to receive the award. Faculty may submit student's projects or proposals for the award, along with a letter of nomination for the student. Students may also submit their own work for the award; in the case of such self-nominations, a letter by the faculty member under whose supervision the work was carried out must accompany the submission.

Application Forms

A one-page application form which includes basic information (name, major, expected career) is available at the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research, 3357 Turlington Hall. All papers, projects, or proposals submitted for the award must be accompanied by this application form and the faculty letter.
