Irene Thompson Scholarship

About Women's Studies

Women's Studies is a discipline in which:

  • theories and methodologies are developed to approach research and teaching about gender differences and similarities in our own and other cultures.
  • an effort is made to re-discover historically ignored lifestyles, writings, and art by and about women, as well as to determine the cultural significance of these findings.
  • a reconsideration of existing findings and interpretations by traditional researchers is undertaken and the contribution of gender-oriented texts and research is analyzed.

Through its subject matter, Women's Studies encourages students to realize their potential and to promote an understanding of gender equality which benefits both female and male students.

Women's Studies has become an established discipline throughout the nation. There are over 65 institutes and centers engaged in large research projects. Most universities offer a B.A. in Women's Studies; many have added an M.A., and some have a Ph.D. The University of Florida offers an interdisciplinary major and a minor in Women's Studies. Graduate students may minor in this field or get a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies.

About the Award

The Women's Studies Program at the University of Florida has established the Irene Thompson Scholarship to honor outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a course of study focusing on women/gender. Many friends of Irene Thompson and of Women's Studies have contributed to the endowment. Further donations are encouraged on a continuing basis. The University has promised matching funds.

In order to build a sense of continuity and to pass on the support to future generations, the award winners should pledge to contribute to feminist scholarships and/or to engage in civic service that benefits Women's Studies after completing their degrees.

The award will range from $500 to $1,000, depending upon the growth of the endowment each year.
