Graduate Certificate in Gender and Development

As demonstrated by research, publications, conference/seminars, and institutional participation, the field of gender and development (GAD) continues to grow. Gender is a critical variable in the analysis of development processes at both the micro and macro levels. Today, government and non-government institutions are paying increasing attention to the role of gender in development for reasons of equity and efficiency.

During the past two decades, GAD scholarship has advanced from a primarily descriptive to an analytical focus. It has undergone increasing sophistication in terms of theory, analysis, and application. GAD researchers at the University of Florida have expertise in theory, research, and application. They represent a broad array of academic disciplines, including Agronomy, Anthropology, Food and Resource Economics, Sociology, Family and Consumer Sciences, Forestry, Geography, Women’s Studies, and others. The GAD Certificate offers students official recognition for the study of Gender and Development in these diverse fields.

Certificate Requirements

The certificate in Gender and Development (GAD) is designed for graduate students from all disciplines who wish to focus on issues related to gender and development.  The GAD Certificate will be awarded to graduate students at the Master’s or Doctoral level, who have completed at least 12 credit hours of approved courses.  Applications for the certificate must be submitted to the Graduate Coordinator in Women’s Studies.  The GAD Committee will review each student’s application for the certificate.  The GAD Committee includes Dr. Anita Anantharam, Women’s Studies; Dr. Marta Hartmann, Agricultural Education and Communications (IFAS); Dr. Anita Spring, Anthropology; and Dr. Sandra Russo, International Center.

Courses have been classified into three groups according to the GAD content.  Additional courses are always under development and may be added.  Students are required to complete three credit hours from Group I, three credit hours from Group II, and six credit hours from Groups I, II, or III.
