Concurrent Master’s Degree with Master of Arts work in Mass Communications (MAMC) with specialization in Journalism
The University of Florida provides a framework for an individual in a master’s program to develop a concurrent degree plan, where two graduate degrees can be pursued at the same time. One increasingly popular concurrent degree plan combines Master of Arts work in Mass Communications (MAMC) with specialization in Journalism with Master of Arts work inWomen’s Studies/Gender Studies (thesis or nonthesis). Whenever appropriate, the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research will work enthusiastically with individual students to develop this collaborative degree program with the College of Journalism and Communication.
Concurrent degree plans at the University of Florida are developed on an individual basis. Nine credits of coursework from one degree may be applied, with Graduate School approval, toward meeting the requirements of the second degree. Students must apply to each degree program separately and concurrent degree paperwork is then completed once students are admitted to both programs. It is also possible to enter the concurrent degree track by applying to the second program after some coursework has been completed in the first program; however, the Graduate School will not authorize participation in concurrent degree programs if either of the degrees involved has already been awarded at the time of application to the concurrent degree program. The concurrent degree plan must have written approval by the administration of each academic unit involved and the dean of the Graduate School. Ultimately, students who successfully complete a concurrent degree plan will graduate with two degrees.
