Ph.D. Concentration

The interdisciplinary PhD concentration in the Women’s/Gender Studies Program provides graduate students an opportunity to develop a thorough grounding in the scholarship produced through the intersection of Women’s Studies and other academic fields of study. PhD students in the following programs or departments may apply to the Concentration program: Anthropology, Germanic and Slavic Languages, History, Psychology, Religion, and Sociology.
NOTE: Students pursuing a PhD in programs/ departments at UF not currently approved as a participating unit may contact the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research about petitioning to have their unit approved for the PhD Concentration.

Women’s/Gender Studies critically explores the role and status of women and men, past and present. By looking at the world in the light of specifically female experiences, Women’s/Gender Studies examines cultural assumptions about gender, the validity of research about women and the effect of political, economic and social systems on the role of women in society. Women’s/Gender Studies not only challenges basic methodologies and presuppositions in established disciplines, but also crosses the boundaries between them, presenting fresh views of the subject matter and creating a new perspective in society.

A PhD Concentration in Women's/Gender Studies generates an understanding of the different research approaches and methods in these fields. The concentration will also facilitate the analysis and assessment of theories about the role of gender in cultural systems and its intersections with other categories of difference, such as race, ethnicity, religion, class, sexuality, physical and mental ability, age, economic and civil status. Emphasis is placed on participating in Women’s/Gender Studies research and on providing an intellectual environment in which cross-fertilization between disciplines can flourish. Graduate faculty from several departments and colleges, campus-wide, participate in the program.

Committee

Ph.D. degrees are awarded through participating departments (Anthropology, Germanic and Slavic Languages, History, Psychology, Religion, and Sociology) with the interdisciplinary Concentration in Women’s/Gender Studies. Graduate degree programs are designed by each student’s faculty advisory committee, headed by the Committee Chair who must be affiliated with the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research. In addition, at least one member of the supervisory committee must be from the Women’s/Gender Studies Concentration. Eligible dissertations must have a Women’s/Gender Studies emphasis.

Admission

Requirements for admission into the Women’s/Gender Studies Program are the same as for the faculty advisor’s home department and college. After admission to the degree granting department, the applications of those students interested in pursuing a doctoral concentration in Women’s/Gender Studies will be sent from the department to the Women’s Studies Graduate Coordinator who will appoint a committee for admissions when needed.
