Cultivating Knowledge(s): Celebrating 25 Years of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Florida

Thursday, October 24 - Saturday, October 26, 2002

The Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research will mark its 25th anniversary with a research symposium featuring the knowledge (both theoretical and community-based) created by Florida faculty, students and community members.

ZoraThis symposium is intended to be a place where Florida researchers, community members, teachers, performers, students, administrators, and activists can examine the variety of ways in which we develop and cultivate knowledge about women and gender. In particular, the symposium will span three days, each with a focus on one aspect of cultivating women's studies and gender knowledge(s): Reclaiming Knowledges (Thursday), Creating Knowledges (Friday), and Action Knowledges (Saturday). Dr. Irma McClaurin will open the symposium on Thursday, October 24 with a plenary talk about the work of Zora Neale Hurston and Native and Black Feminist Anthropology. Dr. McClaurin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology, where she co-coordinates the Zora Neale Hurston Diaspora Studies Research Project with Dr. Kesha Fikes. In 1999, she conducted the Zora Neale Hurston Ethnographic Field School, and is currently working on a book about Zora Neale Hurston as an anthropologist. Her writings on Zora include: "Belle Letters: 'Dear Langston, Love Zora'," "Seeking Zora," and the forthcoming "Zora Neale Hurston: the Life Behind the Archives." In conjunction with the symposium there will be performances and art exhibits at both the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the University Gallery. There are many ways to become involved in this celebration (create a panel of research, organize a meeting of community organizations, create a workshop, do a performance, etc.). See our website at cultivatingknowledges/ck.html for updates and information about how to get involved!
